From Barriers to Opportunities: Redesigning Mobility in European Music Teacher Education

From Barriers to Opportunities: Redesigning Mobility in European Music Teacher Education
Hosted by the Faculty of Education and Arts, Nord University · TEAM – Teacher Education Academy for Music, Future-Making, Mobility and Networking in Europe.

Mobility changes students. A semester abroad can reshape how a future teacher thinks — about pedagogy, about culture, about themselves. And yet, across Europe, far too few student teachers ever get to go.

This webinar presents the findings and tools developed by Work Package 4 of the TEAM project, which investigated the barriers and enabling conditions for international mobility in music teacher education across 13 European institutions.

We will share what we found — the recurring obstacles (housing scams, rigid curricula, information gaps, isolation) and what actually makes mobility work. And we will present the Mobility Designer: a free, interactive tool that translates our 13 research-based design principles into practical guidance for institutions.

The webinar is relevant for everyone involved in mobility — whatever the subject area. The challenges we found are not unique to music. They are about how European higher education handles the gap between the aspiration of mobility and the structural reality students face.

What to expect

  • Key findings from a multi-country qualitative study (75 participants across 7 countries — students, educators and administrators)

  • Introduction to 13 design principles across 5 focus areas — from institutional culture to student well-being

  • Live walkthrough of the Mobility Designer — a free, open-access tool for institutions

  • Q&A and open discussion — your questions, your challenges, your context

  • A moment of something alive — because this is a music education event

About TEAM

The Teacher Education Academy for Music, Future-Making, Mobility and Networking in Europe (TEAM) is an ERASMUS+ collaborative research and development network of 14 partner institutions across 11 European countries.

TEAM aims to reshape music teacher education in Europe — addressing professionalization, digitization, intercultural learning, and sustainability.

Work Package 4 focuses specifically on international mobility: understanding its barriers and building research-based tools to help institutions make mobility the norm rather than the exception.
